A Woman Plastic Surgeon - Tummy Tuck Procedure Overview

I'm Dr. Cynthia Mizgala, a woman plastic surgeon. I'm a Board certified plastic surgeon in practice for close to 25 years now in Metairie, right outside of New Orleans, Louisiana. And it's a pleasure to talk to you about tummy tucks. It's one of my favorite surgeries. It's really a dramatic transformation that I can provide to patients with many different types of issues with their abdomen.

It's mainly women, but I do do some tummy tucks on men. More common in women because of course the childbearing years. And it's very common to do a tummy tuck at the end of completing your family. So, often it's combined with some type of breast procedure, known as a mommy makeover. So the tummy tuck is a routine part of what we call a mommy makeover.

Tummy tucks can be also performed for other reasons, such as massive weight loss or post-bariatric surgery, which is also becoming more common, so patients suffering from morbid obesity can return to a normal lifestyle after losing 100 or more pounds through bariatric surgery or other types of diet aids that are very successful right now.

The surgery takes about two-and-a-half hours in most cases, and the amount of removal of fat and skin depends on the patient. Some people have just a very mini tummy tuck. Other people have as I said 15 pounds of skin to remove. But in all those patients, you can end up with a nice flat stomach. So fat to flat is kinda the way we go.
