Breast Implant Options

During your initial consultation for breast augmentation New Orleans plastic surgeon Dr. Mizgala will help you select a surgical plan based on your body frame, as well as the results you hope to achieve. Breast implants for augmentation come in an assortment of sizes and shapes. Breast implant types are saline or silicone, both approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

Saline breast implants have an outer solid silicone shell, which is filled with saline or salt water after it is placed in the breast. Silicone gel breast implants are prefilled with silicone gel. The popular gummy bear implants are the newest form of improved silicone gel breast implants, cohesive safe silicone. Allergan refers to their different gummy bear implants as gummy, gummier or gummiest, each one having a different level of cohesiveness. The gummy-like gel sticks to itself, as well as to the outer silicone shell to minimize any possibility of leakage. It also holds its shape better and minimizes the possibility of implant ripples.

Size

There are many breast implants to choose from. Implant size is based on the number of CCs of silicone or saline. A silicone implant is prefilled with silicone gel: gummy, gummier or gummiest. A saline breast implant has only a solid silicone outer shell holding the saline (or salt water) filler. Dr. Mizgala will measure how much original tissue exists and the size you hope to achieve. You will have the opportunity to try on various sizes at your consultation to see what a C or D or DD looks like on your body.

During a breast augmentation New Orleans plastic surgeon, Dr. Mizgala will use a sizer or "temporary" implant to visualize the estimated size during the actual surgery. She will sit you up during surgery to see the cosmetic improvement in all positions. Most patients desire a natural but perfect look. A natural breast is full but has roundness only on three sides: the cleavage, the side, and the bottom. There should be no roundness or shelf at the top as this would defy gravity and look unnatural. The sizer implant will help make a surgical breast pocket and also allow Dr. Mizgala to confirm that the size agreed upon at the consultation fits within your tissues and still appears natural.

Shape

Breast implants come in either round or teardrop shapes. New Orleans breast augmentation provider, Dr. Mizgala prefers round implants and makes the pocket anatomical, like a teardrop. This allows the breast implants to move naturally in the pockets instead of relying on the implant staying in one position. Round implants also provide superior pole fullness and cleavage. Round breast implants can have a smooth or textured shell, whether saline filled or silicone filled.

The smooth surface implant is smooth, whereas the textured implant surface is rough. Shaped implants are all textured so they attach to the tissues and don't move because the shape of the implant is designed to sit in one direction. Textured breast implants were designed to minimize capsular contracture; however, capsular contracture is rare to nonexistent in Dr. Mizgala's practice. She prefers smooth shell implants as they feel more natural and have less palpable rippling.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?

Your plan may include a breast augmentation, breast lift or a breast lift with implants. A breast lift removes excess skin to tighten the "skin brassiere" around their breast and often move the nipple complex up and inward. Breast augmentation addresses the size and shape of the breasts. During your consultation with Dr. Mizgala, she will listen to your needs and goals before explaining your treatment options. A combination of augmentation and lift are often a part of a mommy makeover to rejuvenate the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

Your cost for breast augmentation will vary based on your choices and if you are having any other surgeries at the same time. As soon as your treatment plan is developed at your consultation, Dr. Mizgala can talk to you about exact cost and financing options. To ensure your results match your goals and last a long time, it's important to focus on quality over cost. Dr. Mizgala includes all costs in her package prices. This includes the surgery, surgery center, anesthesia, implants, bra, and all follow-up appointments.

The total cost for a straightforward breast augmentation with saline-filled implants totals $4,900. There is the option to upgrade the implant warranty for an additional $200. The enhanced warranty provides up to $2,400 of financial compensation and a new implant(s) for any revision surgery if there is a deflation of either breast implant within 10 years of your surgery date. The total cost for a straightforward silicone gummy bear breast augmentation is $6,300-$6,800 and includes the warranty. The silicone warranty provides up to $3,500 of financial compensation and a new implant(s) for any surgery required for a defect in the integrity of either silicone implant over 10 years from the surgery date

Can I breastfeed with implants?

It is usually possible to breastfeed after implants with the correct surgical technique and placement. Pregnancy and breastfeeding may but don't always alter your results. Dr. Mizgala has many patients who have had children after breast augmentation and their breasts have remained beautiful. In some cases, breast revision surgery or implant exchange or a breast lift might be recommended once your family is complete.

Can I have my implants removed?

You may decide that you want to replace or remove your breast implants. If this happens, Dr. Mizgala can perform breast revision surgery. During the revision surgery, your current implants can either be replaced with new implants or removed. If you choose to have your implants removed, the breasts usually spring back to their pre-surgery appearance.

Most women are pleasantly surprised to see that their breasts look much better than expected after breast implant removal. Some women benefit from a breast lift to tighten the skin brassiere of the breasts after implant removal, but most do not. If you have any questions or concerns after your breast augmentation surgery, schedule an appointment at A Woman Plastic Surgeon to discuss your options.

Do implants cause breast cancer?

Several scientific studies show that breast implants do not increase the risk of breast cancer. Studies also show that women with breast implants who are affected by breast cancer are not diagnosed later than women without breast implants. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a link between implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL).

This is not breast cancer but a cancer of the immune cells. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), implant-related ALCL is very rare and when caught early, it is easy to treat. Dr. Mizgala uses smooth shell breast implants almost exclusively since this rare condition was brought to light and there has been no report of ALCL in anyone who has had only smooth shell breast implants. Dr. Mizgala encourages all patients over 30 to get a baseline mammogram prior to surgery, then to follow up with regular screening mammograms. You should contact A Woman Plastic Surgeon if you notice any concerns, such as swelling or other visible changes.

Ideal Candidates For Breast Augmentation

The choice to go through with breast augmentation surgery is personal. If you are thinking about having this procedure, it is important you do it for yourself and nobody else. A common misconception is that men encourage women to have breast enlargement surgery.

This is not common and it is, in fact, women who love to love their breasts as it enhances their femininity and confidence. You should be healthy with breasts that are fully developed and be the proper age to have breast implants. If you are dissatisfied with the overall appearance of your breasts or if your breasts have been affected by aging, nursing, or weight loss, breast augmentation can bring them back to life with increased volume. It is also a great option if you work out with weights and have little to no original breast tissue.

Surgical Technique

Incision type, as well as implant placement, are decisions that are generally made ahead of surgery. During the procedure, an incision is created, a pocket is formed, and then the appropriate breast implant will be placed in that pocket. The incisions that Dr. Mizgala recommends are either inframammary, in the fold under the breast, or areolar, at the border of the areola with the breast skin. Metairie breast augmentation provider, Dr. Mizgala uses a Keller funnel to insert all silicone breast implants.

This allows her to keep the incision very small (3.5 centimeters). The pocket can then be made under the pectoralis muscle, submuscular placement, or above the muscle under the breast tissue, submammary/subglandular placement. Where to place the implant is based on numerous factors, including the overall type and size of the implant, along with the opinion of Dr. Mizgala. Most New Orleans breast augmentation surgery patients benefit from submuscular placement. This reduces the chance of capsular contracture over time and also camouflages the implant shell for a more natural appearance. No matter where the incision is placed, scarring is often hidden within the natural creases and lines of the breasts. Dr. Mizgala will provide scar creams and/or silicone tape to further minimize the appearance of the scars.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION

Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient surgery using general anesthesia. Following the incision, the appropriate implant will be moved through the incision and deposited into a surgically created pocket, and then fitted into its proper position. Once the implant is in position, the incision is closed with internal sutures.

All New Orleans breast augmentation patients will be taken to a private recovery space and carefully monitored before being released. You will be sent home wearing a recovery bra to assist with support and shaping of the implants. Within a few days, the bruising and swelling will start to slowly go away, and the breasts will begin to feel normal as they settle into their new position. While individual results vary, most patients can engage in normal activities within a few days; however, exercise should be avoided for at least 6 – 8 weeks. Breast augmentation surgery results in beautiful outcomes that look and feel both normal and natural. This treatment can be life-changing for many women.
